Silver Smoketail

I have lived in the Waterside area of the New Forest for the last 45 years. Picking up a camera for the very first time when I was 14, I then proceeded to teach myself the basics and discover the magic of the darkroom.
After a couple of summer holiday photographic jobs with a local marine/commercial photographer I went to work in the photographic department of a Southampton advertising agency, spending two years of my career in the dark! The final year was spent as the company photographer before leaving in 1979 to set up my own industrial photographic business from my parent’s home.
My progression has happened through a mixture of enthusiasm and the all important good luck.

What inspires Me?

It is the individual reactions of people to my images that inspire me to continue expanding my own photographic ideas; giving visual pleasure, forcing others to ‘take another look’, letting their mind question what their eyes see in a totally different way to their neighbour.
The work is best described as “different”; Abstract Photography with a strong leaning towards graphics, often inspired by naturally occurring phenomena and people’s unrelated comments and concepts. The viewer can see many different images within the initial impression
.
A range of photographic techniques, conventional and “off the wall” are employed. Some of the creative ideas have undergone much research and development, through experimentation in the studio, before a final series is shot. A simple idea from an everyday visual event can end up as a very complex studio lighting set up, with many hand made props and pieces of equipment used to bring out the best in the concept.
"A very simple idea that has produced a beautiful image" was the comment from Dr Adam Hart-Davis, a judge at The Visions of Science national competition. My image "Worship" was selected for an award.
